Easter egg hunts and lambing

Broody hen, can you find where she's hiding?

Broody hen, can you find where she’s hiding?

This is one of my favourite times of the year – the days are warming up and getting long, the garden is bursting into colour with daffodils, primroses, blossom and camelias, whilst new life is born on the farm as the Jacob ewes lamb and broody hens appear with their chicks. We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful place and we love sharing it with you.

Bottle feeding orphan tame lambs

April has got to be one of my favourite months; not only is my birthday (on Earth Day 22nd April – Let’s do our bit to help save planet Earth), but the days are warming up and getting longer and nature is doing its magic, as colourful spring bulbs, blossom and animals start to bring some colour & new life into the world. We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful place and we love sharing it with you.

It’s great to get outside, enjoy spring walks through the woodland as the young, fresh leaves unfold. It’s total escapism in the woodland, where we can rekindle our connection with nature, known as #forestbathing, good for the mind, body & soul.

Our Jacob ewes are due to lamb in April so you may be lucky enough to witness the birth of a lamb or at least enjoy watching lambs gambling in the fileds in the evening, as the sun sets.

With Easter on the 9th April, we have some hens eggs in the incubator, hoping that chicks will hatch Easter weekend.

Spring – I just love this time of year on the farm – The greenhouse is full of sown seed trays, the garden is full of Spring bulbs with lots of bright, vibrant colours and the trees are starting to produce fresh green leaves and beautiful blossom, all fabulous for bees and other insects.

The ewes have finished lambing and looking after their lambs well. The lambs are a joy to watch gambling in the evening sun.

We hope that you all had a good Easter and that this update finds you keeping well during these strange times. We’ve had our Covid injections and hope that when places start to open up everyone is responsible so that everything remains safe for all. In order to help keep all safe at Huxtable Farm please read our Covid update, which will be amended as things change.

We’ve been making some changes here at Huxtable Farm, including converting the games room into a washing up area with fridge freezer, table & chairs for the three exclusive camping pitches, each of which has their own private wash room. Whilst one of the bedrooms in a converted barn is in the process of becoming the games room/information room/shop with Jacob wool products, prints of paintings by Jackie and wood furniture made by Antony.

Tame lamb 2021

Tame lamb 2021

I just love this time of year – The gardens are full of Spring colour and blossom, whilst the trees are starting to produce new fresh green leaves. The ewes have finished lambing and looking after their lambs well, whilst I have one tame orphan lamb to look after on the bottle. He’s a Jacob cross Romney lamb, so black with white markings on his eyebrows and chest and needs a name. We’d love to hear your suggestions!

Looking forward to seeing you later in the year.

Corvid-19 Update

Bo - Bottle fed tame lamb

Bo – Bottle fed tame lamb

Thoughts are with everyone during this Corvid-19 pandemic.

Here at Huxtable Farm B&B, we have decided to close initially until the 1st May and will review at the end of April whether this will need to be extended.  We are respecting the government’s recommendations and would hate to be a reason for spreading Corvid-19 further.

If you have any bookings with us in the immediate future please do get in contact if I haven’t contacted you already.

Life here on the farm continues; Antony is pleased to have more help outside i.e. Me ! – Helping put up new fences around the fields, chopping logs for the wood burners etc. And I’m please to have him helping me update the herb garden 🙂

Our small flock of The Jacob ewes have started lambing and are due to produce lambs until about the 20th April. On Easter morning we aim to have some chicks hatching from some of our hens eggs. I’ll keep you updated with photographs.

Hopefully, when this pendemic is all over we will see you later in the year.
